Dog Bed

Today's post is an ode to my dear sweet puppy who is turns one this week. He joined our family back in February. We have loved every moment of Sgt. Pepper. (pepper informally of course)

Of course there are moments when we come home to find that he has "lovingly" destroyed a handful of diapers. (clean thankfully)
But I will gladly overlook all of the "destruction" moments for perfect childhood memories created with this boy. (every boy should have a dog right?)
So today I am making this dear sweet pup a bed to sleep on. To be fair it is due to the fact that he "lovingly" destroyed his first puppy bed. The bed was actually my husbands request since he was sleeping on a pillow, and he really just wanted a cover for the pillow. So, for any other pet lovers out there, here is how to make a dog bed.
My husband had two requests for the bed. 1. That I only use fabric I have on hand he didn't want me to spend money on the bed. 2. he wanted the cover to be removable so it could be washed and cleaned if needed. So Using scraps I cut rectangles out of fleece. (I did rectangles since I didn't have a piece quite large enough but I like the look) Then with some minky fabric I cut rectangle strips for the side panels. So in total I had 8 fleece rectangles, and 4 minky rectangles. (any size you want the bed to be)

First I sewed two rectangles together and to create a flap so that there is an opening to remove the pillows, I cut an extra piece of fleece and sewed it along that edge.

Then I sewed the other two rectangles together and attached it at the sides so the flap overlaps the piece. Then for the top piece I sewed the other four rectangles together to create one large rectangle, this should be the same size at the one with the flap.

Then with the minky rectangles I sewed them all together at the side seams to create a tube, and then I sewed it all along the rectangle. (right sides together) Do the same with the top piece and you should have a pillow case.

Then I drew a bone and his name on some freezer paper Ironed it on to felt and cut out all the pieces.

Then sew or glue the name to the bone.

Lastly sew the bone to the case. Then put the pillows or filling, which ever, inside and you are done.

Now your dog, or cat, has a cozy bed to sleep on.

Enjoy!

  4. Thank you so much! Such a great how to. I was lost on where to start and this was exactly what I needed. Completed Molly's new bed last night and she really seemed to like it. Oh and Sgt. Pepper is so handsome, he looks so proud. :)
